OT Visibility Without the Trade-Off: How Waterfall & Siemens Energy are Securing Critical Infrastructure together
Lior Frenkel
CEO and Co-Founder, Waterfall Security
You cannot run a modern, competitive business without real-time data from your operations. For operators of critical infrastructure, the challenge is getting that data where it’s needed without compromising the security of the industrial environment. We founded Waterfall Security Solutions to solve exactly that problem.
I’m thrilled to partner with the industry and technology leading Siemens Energy to share that mission. Siemens Energy is widely known as an integrated technology energy company that provides much of the energy for the world’s critical infrastructure. The company also has a strong focus on OT (Operational Technology) cybersecurity, working with operators to reduce risk and mature their cybersecurity programs. Together, we are joining forces to deliver a joint solution that gives operators full visibility into their OT environments without adding cyber risk to their operations.
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Leo Simonovich, Vice President and Global Head, Industrial Cyber and Digital Security at Siemens Energy, to talk about advancing secure OT visibility.
Data out, no way in, creating a better joint solution
For years, getting visibility into an operation meant exposing it. Waterfall’s Unidirectional Security Gateway ends that trade-off. We enable full, real-time visibility to the data, with no access back into the systems. The gateway enforces one-way data flow in hardware, so there is physically no inbound attack path through a Unidirectional Gateway.
Siemens Energy’s MDR solution enables advanced real-time cyber threat detection and alerting via their Security Operations Center (SOC). OT cybersecurity experts provide further analysis and insight into detected events to support fast, actionable, and proportionate responses.
MDR integrates process and security data into its detection methodology, Process Security Analytics (PSA), allowing Siemens Energy to capture a more robust and complete data set, better correlate meaningful data points, and understand impacts to production. The joint solution between Waterfall and Siemens Energy for MDR means customers can expect enhanced visibility into their OT environment with actionable insights without any exposure of those OT assets to external threats.
Together with Siemens Energy we are bringing continuous monitoring to market. Waterfall’s gateways take operational data safely out of the OT environment, and Siemens’ analysts turn that data into action, detecting threats faster, contextualizing them, and giving plant operators concrete recommendations. Customers get the best of what Siemens Energy is expert in and the best of what we at Waterfall are expert in, in one solution.
“What I love about our joint solution is that careful balance between connectivity and data ingestion from the operating environment without adding additional risk or complexity to that environment”
– Leo Simonovich, Vice President and Global Head, Industrial Cyber and Digital Security at Siemens Energy
Building a resilient future
The urgency for strong OT security is only growing. Critical infrastructure is expanding with data centers running AI capabilities the world depends on. And those AI capabilities are also changing the threat landscape. A single attacker can now have the power of a large, coordinated team. Our job is to stay ahead of this, building protection that holds up against AI-based attacks and attacks that don’t even exist yet today. That is what we are building toward with Siemens Energy: a resilient future.
