22 Sep 2019 Waterfall’s Unidirectional Gateways Deployed In Dor Alon Energy’s Natural Gas Power Plant
Remote control cyber attacks on industrial sites and critical infrastructure are no longer a hypothetical threat. When malicious attackers gain access to an industrial control system they are able to sabotage industrial control and safety processes, leading to costly outages, damaged equipment, threats to personnel safety and even environmental disasters. More specifically, the threat of targeted ransomware is a grave concern for industrial sites. A targeted attack is one where a remote attacker penetrates a target network and strategically plants malware to cause maximum disruption by encrypting the most important files and machines. Unlike IT networks, when industrial operations are affected, there is no restoring “from backup” of lost production or of equipment damaged by emergency shutdown procedures.
For this reason, Dor Alon Energy selected Waterfall Security Solutions, a global leader in cybersecurity technologies for critical infrastructure and industrial control systems, to deploy Unidirectional Security Gateways in a new private power plant that is being built in Kiryat Gat, Israel. The new cogeneration power center will be supplying 75 megawatts of electricity to the entire Kiryat Gat industrial zone and the Sugat sugar manufacturing plant specifically.
Ilan Schweitzer Dor Alon Energy’s electrical ad I&C manager observes that “The Unidirectional Gateways provide absolute protection from remote cyber attacks by replicating Siemens SPPA-T3000 system via hardware-enforced unidirectional technology for purposes of secure remote turbine monitoring. By deploying Waterfall Security’s Unidirectional Security Gateways throughout the cogeneration power center, Dor Alon Energy will benefit from safe and reliable IT/OT integration, real-time visibility into operations for production billing, optimization and central security monitoring for the critical production network, as well as comply with national cyber regulations applicable to industrial manufacturing sites“.
With Waterfall Unidirectional Security Gateways in place, Dor Energy can be confident of leveraging the business benefits of real-time visibility into operations while reliably defeating remote network attacks, no matter how sophisticated. Unidirectional Gateways replace firewalls in industrial network environments, providing absolute protection to industrial control system and operations networks from attacks originating on external networks. Upon deploying Unidirectional Gateways, critical infrastructure and industrial sites enjoy safe and reliable IT/OT integration, vendor and cloud services access, and remote monitoring.
