Without security, the rail system can be neither reliable nor safe. The continuing trend towards increased connectivity is steadily increasing cyber attack opportunities targeting vital networks, which are the control networks responsible for safe and reliable operations. While many vendors, service providers and operators are ‘designing in’ protection for personally identifiable and corporate-confidential information, far fewer enterprises are designing robust cybersecurity measures for safety-critical and reliability-critical networks. This urgently needs to change.
