A Tale of Two Companies: Ransomware and OT Shutdowns

A Calgary lunch & learn exploring OT impacts of ransomware and how to prevent them

Nobody wants to shut down our pipelines, refineries, or power plants because of a ransomware attack. In this presentation, we will look at how ransomware reaches OT networks – removable media, remote control, supply chain, and autonomous movement. One business was protected by Waterfall’s Unidirectional Gateways – their physical/OT operations were unaffected by the attack. The other business was not so protected and had to shut down.

And then we go deeper. We look at how ransomware reaches OT networks – remote control, supply chain, and autonomous movement. We dig into the three ways that ransomware triggers OT shutdowns – directly, indirectly, and accidentally. And we look at solutions – how to design IT/OT dependencies and unidirectional networks so that business needs are met and ransomware is defeated.

While our high-level goal is to prevent ransomware outright, an even higher priority in most organizations is to keep our physical processes running uninterrupted, even if ransomware does hit us. Join us at noon, October 14 to explore & discuss these pressing issues.

In this event you will learn:

  • 3 ways ransomware triggers OT shutdowns
  • Supply chain ransomware and how to address it
  • Unidirectional designs where inevitable IT/OT dependencies do not trigger OT ransomware shutdowns
